Who are you?

Rebuilding Together Miami-Dade, Inc.(RTMD) is a 501(c)3 non-profit that preserves homeownership and revitalizes communities by providing critical home repairs to low-income, elderly, veterans and disabled homeowners at no cost to the homeowners.

How does this project impact the issue you selected?

The vision is a safe and healthy home for every person. One of our objectives is to keep low-come senior residents in a safe and accessible home so they may age in place. Making non-invasive modifications to the homes such as grab bars, removing tripping hazards and modifying bathrooms significantly decreases the risk of falls, thus improve quality of life, comfort and security in their homes. The average income for homeowners served is $19,800; average age is 70 years old.

What data points from The Our Miami Report does your project address?

Civic Engagement: RTMD utilizes hundreds of skilled and unskilled volunteers. This program offers the opportunity to engage volunteers in meaningful tasks.
Health & Safety: Falls are the leading cause of injury related visits to the emergency rooms. Quality of life improves as access and mobility increases and elders are able to age in placel.
Affordable Housing: Homeowners who live on fixed incomes that pay for food and medicine. There is no money for capital improvements.

Please give examples of your project's success.

Founded in 1993, RTMD has rehabbed 585 homes and donated approximately 6.6 million dollars of market value work to the community. In 2013, RTMD completed 51 projects with a 1000 volunteers and donating $800,000 of market value work to the community. The retrofitting program energizes the community and engages volunteers while addressing the ongoing need of safe housing for the aging population. Retorfitting mitigates risk and provides an environment for low-income seniors to age in place.
