Millennial Action

Although voter participation shows high numbers in Miami Dade the age of the voters reflects very low participation from younger voters. This project intents to look for what would turn a millennial into an active participant in the democratic process.

Who are you?

The League of Women Voters of Miami Dade is a chapter of the 94 year old organization that fought and won the right to vote for women. Our advocacy and education projects focus on voter protection and citizens as stakeholders in our democracy.

How does this project impact the issue you selected?

As our community continues to grow younger it's imperative that the younger generation become engaged in the political process. This starts with voting. Identifying issues and concerns that would move a millennial to cast a vote is the main goal of this project. We intent to find ways to communicate to this group how changes can take place if you take an active role in making it happen and that your vote does count and makes a difference.

What data points from The Our Miami Report does your project address?

The Civic Engagement Goa. Miami-Dade has an engaged citizenry is the data point being addressed. The percentage is high but the idea for this project is to increase this percentage with younger voters. Their low participation in the 2014 midterm election is a concern and a motivator to the League for a call to action. The overall low participation is also a concern.

Please give examples of your project's success.

The Millennial Action project's success will be measured by the increase in participation of young voters in the next two election cycles. It'll focus on young voters within municipalities holding election in 2015 and in the presidential election of 2016. For the 2015 cycle special attention will be placed on those living in the City of Miami. Voter registration drives and issues forums will be conducted as well as a targeted social media network of information.
