Who are you?

The SFDA is a 501(c)(3) whose mission is to expand digital literacy and provide connectivity to all citizens regardless of income level, throughout S Florida. We believe digital literacy is the single most critical educational tool for the future..

How does this project impact the issue you selected?

In our global society the development of technology skills has become a necessity for individuals seeking to excel in education, communications and economic activities. People who lack computer skills and have limited educational opportunities will only have marginal employment prospects. This fundamental economic problem has challenged SFDA to use technology to disrupt the dynamics of poverty and enhance the quality of life for residents of our region.

What data points from The Our Miami Report does your project address?

Civil Engagement - Volunteerism - our program seeks to obtain volunteers to paint the picture of the importance of technology is increasing educational, social and economic opportunities for our residents. Additionally, our project provides a platform that enables other non-profit organizations to effectively and efficiently deliver their message to residents.
Economy - our project looks to increase technology skillsets of residents and thereby their employment prospects.

Please give examples of your project's success.

Currently we have 11 Technology Learning Centers in Miami-Dade County Parks providing 108 computers and internet access for use by the general public. Platform has been used by community programs such as enrollment in the Affordable Care Act in 2014/2015. The platform will also host educational opportunities for youth and adults on various technology related topics. The TLCs will be utilized to host multiple "Hour of Code" events in December 2014 that will teach youth computer coding basics.
