UMCCE: Pathways to Progress

Access to and success in postsecondary educational pursuits is an important factor in today’s socioeconomic climate, particularly in the United States. A substantial literature indicates that going to college is associated with significant increases in opportunity, income, career achievement, health, and quality of life. In America, however, unequal access to high quality educational opportunities remains a serious challenge.... more »

The University of Miami’s Office of Civic and Community Engagement fosters university-community collaboration by engaging the university’s academic resources in the enrichment of civic and community life in our local, national and global communities.

How does this project impact the issue you selected?

The program seeks to address the disparities in high school education in Miami-Dade County Public Schools that leave many students unprepared for a college education by increasing educational opportunities for under-served students and improving their access to resources for college preparedness. In addition, the Partnership provides professional development and supplemental instruction resources for high school teachers.

What data points from The Our Miami Report does your project address?

The program seeks not only to increase the number of students who go on to pursue higher education, but also to provide teachers with classroom support and enhanced materials from UM students who are up to date in their field areas and can help enhance education quality. Miami-Dade County spends less per pupil than the US average, and schools like Miami Southridge and Booker T. Washington have few resources to provide to their students and teachers and administrators who are spread thin.

Please give examples of your project's success.

As mentioned above, Pathways to Progress has been extremely popular with all parties involved. Assessments and evaluations show a high level of satisfaction from the UM students, the high school teachers, and the high school students. CCE employs a rigorous assessment model which measures the impact of the partnership in many ways, including how effective the curricular enhancements were and and how many indicators of the creation of a college-going culture were strengthened or developed.

The Parks Foundation of Miami-Dade is a 501 (c)3 organization which fosters the recreational, educational, environmental and cultural life of the Miami-Dade County community by encouraging and soliciting support for our County’s park system.

How does this project impact the issue you selected?

ARTSreach is the link between youth and success. Students will use the empowerment tools they have been afforded in the Out-of-School ARTSreach Project as an avenue to discover their cultural experiences and build their talents to be creative and expressive. Art enriches us as individuals and collectively as a society. Art not only provides a healthy outlet for expression but defines our community. Youth who engage in arts are 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic success.

What data points from The Our Miami Report does your project address?

Arts and Culture - Part of the mission of Miami-Dade County Parks is to bring a wide variety of arts and cultural learning opportunities to the youth of our community. The arts are a powerful tool for engaging and supporting children as they move through adolescence. By giving voice to their thoughts, feelings, and experiences, youth become empowered to face their challenges and pursue their dreams. A well-designed executed art education serves as a critical component to a complete education.

Please give examples of your project's success.

Miami-Dade Parks created an innovative summer arts camp, G.E.M. Girls Empowerment and Mentoring Arts Program. The G.E.M. program received The National Association of Counties’ 2013 Achievement Award and was recognized by FIU for making the 2013 Internships Dean’s List. G.E.M.’s success serves as a model of what we have made possible and we will continue this legacy for ARTSreach, aimed towards all genders. ARTSreach will provide our youth with the tools to turn challenges into opportunities.

Who are you?

Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center serves as a central intake, screening, case-management, and coordinating and referral resource for Haitian children and families in Miami-Dade County, and we've been doing so for 14 years.

How does this project impact the issue you selected?

The project will create civically engaged community leaders. The Fellowship will insist on teamwork, accountability, shared responsibility, and honest reflection, four components that are important for the stabilization of the Haitian community. When the present community leaders inevitably hand the reigns over, we want to ensure that those receiving the reigns are fully prepared and completely understand the challenging but worthwhile task ahead of them.

What data points from The Our Miami Report does your project address?

Sant La Fellows addresses the young adult volunteer rate. We will cultivate young Miami residents who will address the needs of the Haitian community. In order to successfully accomplish those tasks, the Fellows will also have to become engaged electors.

Please give examples of your project's success.

The success of Sant La Fellows will be measured by the number of young Haitians who: are ready to lead; invest their time and talent in South Florida’s civic life; are able to raise awareness of the successes and continuing obstacles in the Haitian community in their social circles, including social media; invest their dollars into the community’s causes.

Who are you?

PTLLC is a leadership and learning center that offers opportunities through education, civic engagement, and community empowerment. We are located in the heart of Little Haiti and known as the 'living room' of the Haitian community.

How does this project impact the issue you selected?

The awareness day serves as a pivotal point in the lives of the young adults here. It serves as a stepping stone that launches the young adults into potentially holding public office. When young people are aware of what's at stake, and what contributions they can make to better the life of their communities, they're more inclined to participate in the process. Haitian Americans are making their marks in the political arena, but it all starts with awareness and engaging conversations.

What data points from The Our Miami Report does your project address?

It shows the low rate of volunteerism; as more young people become aware of the circumstances that surrounds the life of their communities, they become more empowered to be part of the solutions. This process encourages the young adults that participate to take an active role in figuring out what's best for their communities.

Please give examples of your project's success.

We have created more 200 young adult volunteers who actively participate in community issues. One of our greatest successes was a recent trip to Washington DC. A group of 18 young men and women traveled to DC to meet with our delegates. We interacted with house representatives, senators, and staffers. Following that trip we had more young adults who understood the fabric of their government and who were willing to participate in the process.
