Who are you?

The Collective is an event hosted by a group of like-minded Miami based organizations who work within the medium of hip hop to develop and create programs that engage and support young emerging artists in the communities in which we work and live

How does this project impact the issue you selected?

For dancers who utilize hip hop dance as an art form, participation in competitions is essential to remaining competitive on a national level. By providing a safe and accessible environment for young extraordinary artist to test and master their craft, it showcases an environment rich in the arts and demonstrates Miami’s dedication to providing cultural enrichment opportunities for all art forms.

What data points from The Our Miami Report does your project address?

The Collective addresses the idea that early participation in the arts encourages lifelong interest in cultural pursuits. As a regional attraction, The Collective promotes the participation of all ages and utilizes the art of hip hop to connect emerging arts enthusiasts to the power of the arts. As an ongoing event,The Collective has the ability to garner national exposure as it lures both tourist and local spectators looking to participate, learn and/or support this global art form.

Founded in 1992, Rennie Harris Puremovement’s (RHPM) is the first professional hip hop dance company in the world. In a society where hip hop is often inaccurately portrayed as an undisciplined counterculture, RHPM deconstructs this popular perception by expanding and challenging the boundaries of hip hop’s popular definitions. As hip hop continues to be the chosen language of youth expression, RHPM works to honor its history, explore its ideas, and further its contributions to our society.
