popSTART is a not-for-profit initiative of the Global Shapers Community: Miami Hub which aims to help small independently owned businesses by connecting them with strategic resources throughout the local community.

Who are you?

We are Global Shapers: Miami Hub, an initiative of the World Economic Forum. Our organization consists of 22 young professionals all focused on improving the city of Miami, targeting the areas of Education, Entrepreneurship and Technology.

How does this project impact the issue you selected?

We believe that small business, such as mom-and-pop, stores, help not only maintain the culture and identity of Miami, but also provide significant economic growth. However, small businesses often struggle surviving amidst the ever-changing economy. We seek to identify those struggling small businesses and connect them with the resources they will need to survive and compete in Miami's markets.

What data points from The Our Miami Report does your project address?

Our project looks to increase the percentages of small business formation. We believe that we can help these . Furthermore, some of these small business may also look to expand into a mid-sized firm/business. By providing them with the necessary tools and resources to execute that expansion, our project brings substantial value to the table.

Please give examples of your project's success.

We have reached out to organizations such as Accion (based in NYC) and TechTown (based in Detroit), which both have a similar business model and achieved significant success in bringing aid to small business. We plan to execute a similar project model as these organizations to help Miami's small businesses address their various needs.
