Mobile Food Pantry

The Mobile Food Pantry (MFP) is one of Feeding South Florida’s (FSF) most innovative and effective approaches to bringing nutritious foods into neighborhoods that have been deemed food deserts. The residents in these areas have limited access to nutritious food and/or retail grocery stores and live below the federal poverty level. Feeding South Florida's mission is to end hunger in South Florida by providing immediate access to nutritious food, leading hunger and poverty advocacy efforts and transforming lives through innovative programming and education.

How does this project impact the issue you selected?

Food insecurity (not knowing where you will get your next meal), caused by low wages and little access to healthy food, is a significant barrier that prevents so many from living, working and thriving in Florida. According to Children’s Health Watch, food insecurity is linked to increased hospitalizations, developmental problems, and higher obesity rates among children. For older adults, food insecurity is tied to increased risk of heart disease, osteoporosis, kidney failure, and memory loss.

What data points from The Our Miami Report does your project address?

Feeding South Florida Mobile Food Pantry addresses the Our Miami Report Health and Safety Goals 2 and 3. In particular, the 23.9% of the population of Miami that is considered obese, the heart disease death rate of 352.4 per 100K among individuals ages 35 and above, and the stroke death rate of 60.3 per 100K among individuals ages 35 and above all have direct links to the access members of our community have to healthy food options.

Each week, FSF and Glory Temple Ministries, located in the Liberty City neighborhood of Miami, host a Mobile Food Pantry (MFP). Hundreds of families in need receive fresh fruits and vegetables in a farmer’s market style distribution. Individuals have the option to choose the items they like with the same dignity as shopping in a regular open-air market, rather than receiving donated items that they may not use. Each week, an average of 16,842 pounds of food are distributed through this MFP.
